　さて、昨日突然始まったチャリティ・ソング特集。今回はその第二弾です。

　Part 1では史上初のチャリティ・シングルとしてBand Aidの"Do They Know It's Christmas"を取り上げましたが、英国のアーティストが集結したBand Aidに触発されて、すぐにアメリカでもアクションが起きました。もうお分かりですね。そう、U.S.A. for Africaによる"We Are The World"です。

　こちらの発起人はHarry Belafonteで、彼の呼びかけに応じて、アメリカで活躍する45人のアーティストが集結しました。その中にはRay Charles、Stevie Wonder、Bob Dylan、Bruce Springsteenと、ポピュラー音楽の生きる伝説たちが含まれ、明らかにBand Aidを遙かに凌ぐスーパー・ウルトラ・ミラクル・ボンバー級のプロジェクトとなりました。ロックの生誕地アメリカの意地と底力を見せつけたといったところでしょうか。

　楽曲は当時『Thriller』が世界中で爆発的に売れていた黄金期のMichael Jacksonと、80's ポップス・シーンの頂点に君臨していたシンガーソングライターLionel Richieが手がけ、ゴスペル・ライクなコール＆レスポンスと合唱をうまく取り入れた最高のバラードに仕上げられました。

　そして1985年度のアメリカン・ミュージック・アウォードが開催された夜、世界に名だたる超豪華参加アーティストたちが、Quincy Jonesのスタジオで一堂に会し、Quincyの総指揮の下、一斉にヴォーカル・パートを吹き込みました。このレコーディングにはBand Aidの発起人であるBob Geldofも参加し、録音前に全員の前で短いスピーチをしてプロジェクトの意図を伝え、全員の志気を高めています。一部始終は完全録画され、テレビでドキュメンタリー番組として放送されて、世界中で何千何百万人という視聴者がそれを目撃しました。またそれを元にPVが制作され、毎日狂ったようにMTVで流されたのです。

　シングルは当然世界中で空前絶後の大ヒットを記録。USA for Africaのプロジェクトは英国のBand Aid以上の資金を集め、それらをBand Aid同様にアフリカ飢餓救済基金に寄付しました。

　めでたし、めでたし。

　・・・と、終わりたいところなのですが、Band AidとUSA for Africaはアフリカの飢餓の問題を商業的に利用しただけの偽善的プロジェクトであるという批判が存在します。それは欧米の過去から現在に渡る第三世界からの資源の略奪がそうしたアフリカの惨状を引き起こしているにも関わらず、そのことには殆ど触れられなかったこと、お金を渡した後はまともな活動もなく、依然厳しい食糧難が存在するにも関わらず、チャリティ活動が一過性の流行で終わってしまったことなどによるものです。

　そうした中で唯一U2のBonoだけが休暇を利用してエチオピアの労働キャンプに参加したことは特筆に値するかもしれません。また1995年度のアメリカン・ミュージック・アウォードのラストでUSA for Africa 10周年を記念して大合唱大会が行われたのですが、Princeはステージ上にいたにも関わらず、ずっとチュッパチャップスを舐めたまま歌おうとせず、Quincy Jonesが見るに見かねてマイクを向けると、代わりにチュッパチャップスを「君も舐める？」と言わんばかりに差し出したという伝説が残っています。Princeは"We Are The World"のレコーディングに参加を表明しながら録音当夜にドタキャンして酒盛りをしていたという「前科」がありましたが、ここまでくるともう確信犯。彼はこのプロジェクトが偽善であると暗に批判していたのでしょうか？？？答えは風に吹かれている・・・。
